Enoch

The names of two persons in the OT.

1. Cain's son born to him after his banishment from the presence of God for his murder of his brother Abel (Gen 4:17-18). Cain also named the city he was establishing after his son. The name is derived from a word which, in the verbal form, speaks of "inauguration," "starting something new/anew." These actions are, therefore, laden with suggestions of—and reflective of Cain's hope for—a new beginning. Enoch, in turn, became the father of Irad. This individual is mentioned only in these two verses in the Bible.

2. The son of Jared, and the 7th generation great-grandson of Adam and Eve (Gen 5:18). This Enoch is the more famous of the two individuals of this name because, famously, he not only "walked with God" but also, mysteriously, "was no more, because God took him away." Heb 11:5 affirms the understanding that this means that he ended his life translated into God's presence without going through the normal portal of death. Jude, interestingly, speaks of Enoch as prophesying the coming of God in judgment (Jude 1:14). Enoch was the father of the equally famous Methuselah, because he lived so long.
