The study of the origins of words.

Etymology plays an important part in biblical studies, for it helps us to understand what a particular word originally meant. Since words change in meanings over time and in use, however, etymology is not a sure guide into the meaning of any word at a particular time in use. Only familiarity with the culture and literature of the people using the word can.
