A general name given by historians to the arch of land spanning the environs of the Rivers Tigris and Euphrates and down the coast of the Levant. Surrounded by the Syrian deserts in the hollow of its arch and the Taurus and Zagros mountains to its north-west and north-east, the Fertile Crescent represents a contrasting region of fertility and the birth-places of the some of the earliest human civilizations.
