The dynasty of Roman emperors established by Vespasian when he gained control in the chaos following the suicide of Nero in 68. Amidst the fighting and killing taking place in Rome, his troops proclaimed him emperor while he was at Caesarea in Judea, where he was putting down the First Jewish Revolt. Vespasian was succeeded by his son Titus when he died in 79. Titus, who succumbed to a fever in 81, was succeeded by his brother Domitian. Domitian's later years were marked by suspicions and divisions; on 18 September 96 he was stabbed to death by the chief of his palace domestic staff. His death, greeted with joy everywhere, brought an end to the Flavian dynasty. He was succeeded by a senatorial appointee, Nerva, who eventually earned the honour of being the first of the "Five Good Emperors."
