Friars

The title—from Latin fratres for 'brother'—for a member of any of the Mendicant (Begging) orders founded during the Middle Ages. They are distinguished from monks in that the latters' ministry is centered around their monastary, friars (though they have a local headquaters, known as the friary) their ministry is in the world, out there amongst the common people, working as evangelists and spiritual councellors.

In England, friars are distinguished by the colour of the habits they wear. Blackfriars are members of the the Dominican order, Whitefriars the Carmelite, and Greyfriars the Franciscans.
