The title of the first book of the Bible Genesis narrates events relating to the beginning of the world, explaining what humans were meant to be, how they became fallen and broken as they are, and the (new) beginnings of how—through the person of Abram (Abraham) and his family—God would choose a people for Himself through which His plan of restoration for the world would be accomplished.
The book of Genesis may be divided into two parts: 1) the so-called Pre-Patriarchal Narratives, Chaps 1-11, which deal with the 'history' of the world from the beginning until the time when humans became divided into their various races, and 2) the Patriarchal Narratives, Chaps 12-50, which deal with God's call of one person—Abram—to leave all that was precious to him and to live a life directed by Him so that, ultimately "all peoples on earth will be blessed through" him (Gen 12:3). Though usefully divided for easier understanding in this way, the two divisions, in fact, slide seamlessly from one into the other.
