Today modern Germany is one of the most advanced and influential nations in Europe. The united Germany we know today, however, is a product due to the unifying efforts of Otto von Bismarck in the 19th Cent that was proclaimed in May 1871 in (of all places) the Hall of Mirrors, Versailles. Until its birth as a modern nation, Germany (as it is often referred to in church histories) was a loose conglomerate of more than a hundred independent states, that was part of the Holy Roman Empire.
