The Gihon was ancient Jerusalem's only source of water, and part of a very extensive subterranean system. The spring laid outside the citywall until King Hezekiah, threatened by the approach of the Assyrian army, closed it over and had a tunnel dug underneath the city to channel the water to the Siloam Pool within. The spring, however is, as its Hebrew name implies, a "gusher"—its water flowing forth in spurts.

Gihon is also mentioned in Gen 2:13 as one of the four rivers flowing out of the garden of Eden. It is certain that this river is not to be identified with the above.
Near here, 1 Ki 1:33 tells us, Solomon was crowned king of Israel after Adonijah's attempt to sieze the throne for himself.
