The name given to the series of revivals in the North American colonies during the period from 1725 to 1760. The preachers best well-known for their involvements in this movement are Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield.
The Great Awakening made a deep impact on the American society, including a renewal in educational concerns expressing itself in the establishment of universities like Princeton, Rutgers, Brown, Dartmouth, and the University of Pennsylvania, and in planting the seeds for interdenominational tolerance, as well as increase in missions to the native Indians.
