Helena

Mother of Constantine the Great.

Abandoned by her husband, she was accorded great honour by her son, especially after he became Emperor of the Roman Empire. A woman of great energies and piety, she zealously supported the Christian cause. In 326 she went to Palestine and there helped established a number of churches, including ones in Bethlehem, Mount Olive, and the especially the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre, during which the "true cross" was supposed to have been found.
