King of England from 1154-89, Henry II was the fourth king of England since the Norman invasion in 1066, but also the first Plantagenet (aka Angevin) king. His reign as a whole was marked by the rebellions of his three sons and wife (Eleanor of Aquitaine) and the infamous murder of Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury. He brought little to enrich the life of the nation, and at a time when many kings in Europe were fighting the Third Crusades, he stayed home.
