Herodotus

Greek historian famous for his history of ancient Greece.

Little is known about Herodotus' life. Born in Halicarnassus (modern Bodrum, Turkey) in the early part of the 5th cent. BC, he was banished from his home by a local tyrant, whereupon he visited Babylon, Phoenicia, Egypt and various other places around the Mediterranean before settling in southern Italy. He began writing his histories beginning about 450 BC (about the time of Malachi's ministry), which ran into nine books.
