One of the five major tenets of developed Calvinism, irresistible grace is the idea that for God must first act in grace in a person's life before she would come to salvation in Christ. This grace, is argued, is so powerful that it is "irresistable."
At first glance this idea seems counter-intuitive since all of us know how we do often resist God, and know of friends and family members who actively and, seemingly, "successfully" resist the grace of God. For this reason many theologians in modern times prefer to used terms like "effective grace" or "efficacious grace" instead.
