Ivory

The Hebrew word for ivory is shenhabbim, possibly a compound of shen, 'tooth,' and habbim, an African word for elephant. Shenhabbim is found only twice in the OT (1Ki 10:22 & 2 Chron 9:21). The English word for 'ivory,' however, appears in most translations of the OT another 10x, where it translates just the word shen. It is the contexts that suggests that ivory was meant. Ivory appears in the NT only in Rev 18:12, where it translates the Greek word elephantinon.

As in all cultures—ancient and modern—ivory was prized in ancient Israel as a luxury indicative of wealth and status, adorning thrones, inlaid in furniture and crafted into fashion accessories. All the occurrences of the word appear in this context; gold and/or silver is not far away.
