The grand-neice of Henry VIII, who was named by Edward VI to succeed him on the English throne, hoping thereby to bypass the Catholic Mary I, daughter of Catherine of Aragon. Jane Grey happened, rather conveniently also, to be the daughter-in-law of, Edward's chief councillor.
Mary's popularity, however, won her the day, and Jane remained Queen only nine days. She might have survived; she never wanted the throne and it was clear to everyone that she was simply an unhappy pawn of others. An uprising, of which she had no part or knowledge, however, sealed her fate; she was imprisoned and later executed.
