Jehoshaphat

r. 870-848 BC

Son of Asa, Jehoshaphat (which means 'Yahweh judges' in Hebrew) was the fourth king to rule Judah after the split with Israel. A capable and God-fearing man, his reign is known for its social, civil and religious reformation. He reformed the nation's judicial system and sent out teams of priests and Levites on rounds to the country to teach the law to the people, while ordering the removal of the objects of pagan worship Jehoshapat's later reign was compromised by his alliance with King Ahab and his Baal-worshipping wife Jezebel, and their son Ahaziah.

The story of Jehoshaphat is told in 1 Ki 22:2-

The first task Jehoshaphat set himself to do as soon as he came to power was to fortify the boundaries of his kingdom against Israel (2 Chron 17:1-2). After that came the business of cleansing the land of idolatry (2 Ki 22:43) and then fortifying the people against spiritual laxity by sending out teams of priest and Levites to instruct the people (2 Chron 17:7-9) So well did he accomplished these for the welfare of the nation,
