"Joshua son of Jozadak" was the priest who accompanied Zerubbabel in the return of the first batch of exiles from Babylon to Judah upon the proclamation of the edict of Cyrus in 538 BC. He is always the first to be named among the priests in the books of Ezra and Nehemiah, which comports with the title of "high priest" by which he is called in Haggai and Zechariah. As such he would naturally have been responsible for all things related to the rebuilding and rededication of the temple, as well as for the services therein, from the first days, through the opposition reported in (Ezr 4) till its completion in about 516/5 BC. Though mentioned a total of 26x in the four books noted above, and occupying an entire chapter in "the word of the Lord" of Zechariah (Chap 3), most of these references are rather incidental and gives little to build a picture of him as a person.
