Within a Christian context, the word "the law" is usually, understood as either as 1) a translation of Hebrew word torah, i.e., the instructions for living the life of faith given through Moses, recorded in the Pentateuch and often referred to as the "Laws of Moses," or 2) as that which is opposed to grace as the means of salvation.
These are, of course, two separate things though they are often confused with one another with grave implications for the Christian life. The confusion is also compounded by the fact that the word has a broader span of meanings than just these two but when used in these ways are often left undefined.
