The third book of the Bible, the book of Leviticus takes its name from the fact that the book consists essentially of instructions to the Levites and the priestly order in their services in the worship of God. As it was with the book of Exodus, Leviticus is simply a continuation of the story of God's plan of salvation begun in the book of Genesis. The Hebrew name, wayyiqra', 'called,' comes from the first word in the book, "The Lordspan> calledi to Moses . . ." clearly reflects this continuation.
The book of Exodus had ended with instructions for the construction of the tabernacle where Israel could properly worship God. Leviticus is the "manual of priestly duties" for the priests and levites who had been assigned to care for the worship at the tabernacle. This does not mean, however, that the book is irrelevant to those (and those of us) who are not levites or priests. In that the instructions are God's they reflect what God finds pleasing to Him. Studying these instructions helps us to understand the meaning of the vital concept of holiness, and what it means to come to into God's presence. Surely if the Christian church had paid more attention to the book of Leviticus in its preaching, we would not dare to tolerate the slopping ways and means we come to church each Sunday (or dare sing some of the terrible self-centered lyrics we find in our modern churches). But Leviticus is not merely about personal holiness but what it means to live in a community committed to holiness, which includes care for the poor. We highly recommend listening to Nancy Guthrie's interview with Jay Sklar for an excellent overview of the values and relevance of Leviticus for us today (see below).
