These words are used so frequently in common conversation that most of us do not bother to think about what they really mean, or rather what 'we' really mean when we use them. When we do think about them, we begin to realize that it is really an empty word suggesting that something good or pleasant happened but we do not know why and of which we have no way of predicting or explaining. For non-Christians luck is often understood as the blessing of some unseen and unknown, perhaps unknowable, forces or 'god.' Christians have no use of such an idea, for Christians are children of God the Father who "knows what you need before your ask him" (Matt 6:8). Jesus assures us that nothing befalls us who believe without our heavenly being aware and in control of them, "Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father's care" (Matt. 10:29).
