- Emperor Maximilian pledges in letter to Leo X to "set a stop to the most perilous attack of Martin Luther . . . lest not only people but even princes may be seduced."
- Luther receives "A Dialogue against Martin Luther's Presumptuous Theses concerning the Power of the Pope' from Dominican Sylvester Prieras on behest of Pope Leo X, with a summon to appear in Rome within sixty days.
- Augustinians of Saxony ordered by the head office in Rome to surrender Luther to Rome "bound in chains, fetters and handcuffs" (25 August).
1518, 7 October - Leo X writes Friedrich the Wise to woo the latter not to support Luther but to surrender him to the see of Rome.
- Cajetan interviews Luther at Diet of Augsburg but fails to get Luther to recant (12-14 Oct).
1518, 9 November - Leo issues the bull Cum Postquam ('When After') stating forthwith that indulgences is a matter of Church doctrine and anyone who questions their sale may be treated as a heretic.
- Friedrich the Wise writes Maximilian for Luther's case to be heard in Germany instead of Rome (19 November).
- Luther lodges a public appeal with a notary for his case to be heard by a general council of the Church (28 November).
