Metonymy

A figure of speech in which one object is used in place of another whose meaning it is commonly associated with. E.g., in the request, "Please give me a hand," the word 'hand' is used in place of 'help." O "Lend me your ears," 'ears' substitute for 'attention.'

Like all figure of speech, mytonymy calls attention to what is said.
