Miktam (Michtam)

Probably a musical term, miktam appears 6x in the Psalter in the headings to Psms 16, 56, 57, 58, 59, & 60, and is never translated in English translations. Its meaning is a matter of debate, the effort to elucidate it made difficult because the assumed root is not used elsewhere in the OT. One attractive suggestion holds that, since all the psalms to which it is applied envisage perilous circumstances, the word may imply the "covering of the lips in secrecy," hence, a "silent prayer".
