New England

The name given to the region in northeastern United States conprising the states of Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.

The name was first given to the region by Captain John Smith who first explored the area in 1614 on behalf of a number of London merchants. It was not long afterwards settled by English Puritans seeking to set up a homeland in which they could live and worship God according to their convictions. The region is one of the most picturesque regions of the US and eventually became well known for its educational institutions such as Yale and Harvard.
