A small town in the territory of Benjamin (north of Jerusalem) occupied by priests descended from the line of Eli. Nob is famous in the OT as the place to which David came as he fled from Saul's displeasure with him. Hungry and exhausted he asked Ahimelech the priest for provisions of bread. Since there was none about except for some left-over consecrated bread (1 Sam 21:1-6), Ahimelech gave those to David, as well as a sword. From there David fled south. David's presence in Nob, however, was reported back to Saul, who then summoned the priests accusing them of conspiring with David and had the "the town of the priests, with its men and women, its children and infants, and its cattle, donkeys and sheep" put to the sword (1 Sam 22:19). Only Abiathar, the son of Ahimelech, escaped.
The town is mentioned in passing only two other occasions in Neh 11:32 and Isa 10:32.
