From a biblical point of view revelation may be defined as the act of God making Himself known to us humans. Revelation is, first, necessary, because humans—by the fact of his creatureliness as well as the fact of his sinfulness—cannot find out anything of real certainty about God by their own independent enquiry. Revelation is possible, however, because God, by His character and love, does not wait to be discovered. Even in his disobedient state, when he would rather hide from God, God sought him our, "Where are you?" (Gen 3:9). "Our knowledge of God is, instead, consequent on and correlative to God's disclosure of himself to us" (J. I. Packer).
