Sermon on the Mount

The popular name given to Jesus's teaching on the ethics of the Kingdom of God recorded in Matt 5-7; and contains some of the "hardest sayings" of Jesus concerning how his followers are to live and behave.

Few passages of Scriptures are as widely known, even among non-Christians (who often understand them to be the defining characteristics of Christians), as the Sermon on the Mount and the Ten Commandments, and few others as little understood. The Sermon on the Mount, however, was "the most widely cited passages of Scriptures in the Ante-Nicene Fathers, played a major part in the way various reform movements of the sixteenth century understood their relationship to secular society, and has continued to play a role in the way Christians understand themselves and their role in contemporary life."
