Open Family Tree

Little is known about how Henry and Jane Seymour met, though her presence as a lady in waiting to Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn would have presented many such opportunities. She was also the daughter of Sir John Seymour of Wolf Hall. It is possible that she caught his eyes when Henry visited Wolf Hall in 1535. Like Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour refused to be Henry's mistress. Unlike Anne, she gave him a male heir, and was un-entangled by affairs. But Jane did not live long to enjoy her royal privileges. On 12 Oct 1537 she gave birth to a healthy son, who was named Edward (after Edward the Confessor), but became sick with puerperal fever, and died 12 days later. She was aged 29.
