Shur

A region of desert east of Egpyt and of indeterminate dimensions, often referred to as the periphery to life in the settled regions of both Egypt and Palestine. The OT says nothing by way of description about it.

CONCORDANCE (NIV)

Shur appears 6x in as many verses in the OT:

Gen 16:7 — The angel of the LORD found Hagar near a spring in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur.

Gen 20:1 — Now Abraham moved on from there into the region of the Negev and lived between Kadesh and Shur. For a while he stayed in Gerar, [and there Abraham said of his wife Sarah, "She is my sister." Then Abimelech king of Gerar sent for Sarah and took her.]

Gen 25:18 — His [Ishmael's] descendants settled in the area from Havilah to Shur, near the border of Egypt, as you go towards Asshur. And they lived in hostility towards all their brothers.

Exo 15:22 — Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea and they went into the Desert of Shur. For three days they travelled in the desert without finding water.

1 Sam 15:7 — Then Saul attacked the Amalekites all the way from Havilah to Shur, to the east of Egypt. [He took Agag king of the Amalekites alive, and all his people he totally destroyed with the sword.]

1 Sam 27:8 — Now David and his men went up and raided the Geshurites, the Girzites and the Amalekites. (From ancient times these peoples had lived in the land extending to Shur and Egypt.)
