The name given to the conflict from 91-88 BC fought between Rome and their Italian allies (socii) over felt inequalities over civil privileges and land distribution. It was quickly put down when Rome promised Roman citizenship to those who would put down their arms.
In the centuries since the small city-state of Rome had been expanding outward from the confines of the city, Rome had sought allies among the many Italian people. Roman aristocrats, however, were far from keen to share the priviliges of those who were Romans with these allies (socii). Resentment over these issues had been building up for years. In 90 BC this resentment broke out into violent rebellion. This war also provided the opportunities for ambitious men such as Marius and Sulla to hone their career for eventual civil war in 83-82.
