Suetonius

b. c. 69; d. c.140.

A Roman historian, most famous as the author of Lives of the Caesars, a biography of the emperors Julius Caesar to Domitian, that presents useful insights into the private lives and public activities of the emperors, and especially of the religious practice of the Romans. His other important works include The Lives of Illustrious Men, and works on grammar, natural sciences, and Roman antiquities.

Suetonius began his professional life as a teacher before becoming secretary in various imperial offices, reaching his acme in charge of imperial correspondence under Emperor Hadrian, from which post he was dismissed in 122 for disrepectful behaviour towards the Empress Sabrina. Unfortunately, little is known about the details of Suetonius's own life.
