Tamar (Place)

The name of a place mentioned only in the book of Ezekiel as a maker-town delineating the new borders of the land in his vision of the new order of things to come (47:18, 19, 28). No details are found that enable us to identify it except that it was located somewhere in the south-east of the country.

Tamar, which means 'date palm,' appears, however, as part of the names of two other places. Hazazon Tamar is a synonym for En-Gedi (2 Chron 20:2; Gen 14:7). A location called Baal Tamar is mentioned as the position taken up by the Israelites in their war with the tribe of Benjamin; the context suggests it was near the city of Gibeah. Otherwise nothing is known about it.
