Tarshish appears 19x in the Old Testament of which 15 refers to a coastal city famous for its trade. The book of Jonah refers to this city 3x as the place to which the prophet fled when he was commanded to go preach to the wicked city of Nineveh. The identity of the city is unknown though it is generally thought to be in the direction of modern Spain.
On 4 other occasions, Tarshish refers to the names of three different persons: 1) a descendant of Noah (Gen 10:4; 1 Chron 1:7), 2) a descendant of Benjamin (1 Chron 7:100, and 3) one of wise counselor of King Ahasuerus, (Est 1:14). No details about any of them are given in Scriptures.
