The Old Testament practice, sanctioned by Scripture, of setting aside a tenth of one's income a) as a gift to God or other persons, and b) for the use of the sanctuary and the needy in the community. The word is derived from the Old English word meaning "one tenth," which is also the meaning of the Hebrew term for the practice.
The New Testament has almost nothing to say about tithing; it neither demands, nor does it proscribe,the practice (but see Article below).
