One of the most iconic buildings in London, the Tower of London has served as a place of royal residence (especially in times of trouble) and as a prison and site of many executions, especially of significant persons (common criminals were hanged and quartered). The first building was ordered built by William the Conqueror on the northern bank of the River Thames, just outside the old city of London to impress—to show who is in power—and to deter attacks on the powers of the king. Other buildings were added later and became the best-ammunitioned and protected fortress in the land. A managerie of animals was also kept in the Tower, which became the nucleus of the later London Zoo.
