Literally, "beyond the Jordan," TransJordan is a short-hand term coined by geographers to refer to the land east of the River Jordan. In ancient times this would have included the lands known as Bashan, Gilead, Ammon, Moab, and Edom. Today the land is the territory of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

Cis-Jordan, "this side of the Jordan," by contrast, refers to what was Canaan, and later Israel, Judah, Samaria, Ephraim, etc. The inclusive term used for this land since the 2nd Cent AD is Palestine, which today is occupied by modern Israel, the West Bank and Gaza.
