There are two kinds of verbs: transitive and intransitive.
Transitive verbs expresses action that necessarily affect another object other than the subject (think of transiting), e.g., "Jesus broke the bread", "the snake bit Paul".
Intransitive verbs expresses actions that do not pass over to something else, e.g., "I remain", "she wept", "the sun shines", "he stayed". Intransitive verbs, therefore, do not take a direct object.
