Triclinium

A dining room, especially in the home of well-off Romans, in which benches are arranged along three sides in a U-shape; on these benches host and guest incline for the meal.

Many scholars believe that it was in such a setting that Jesus and the disciples ate their last supper together, with Jesus as the host and John, in the honoured position on his right, since he was the one "who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper" (Jn21:20). The position of the rest is not mentioned though some commentators have speculated that Peter was at the lowest position, at the end of the triclinium.
