Ugaritic

Ugaritic is an ancient language first re-discovered in the 1920s when archaeologists were excavating the site Ras Shamra or Ugarit in modern day Syria. It is never reported in the Bible but is found to be related to biblical Hebrew as modern French and Spanish are to Latin. This makes it rather useful for helping us to better understand biblical Hebrew as a cognate. In particular the language has provided biblical scholars great insights into the worship of 'Baal,' the gods of the Sidonians (whose ancient territory is now part of modern Syria), which Jezebel introduced into Israel in her days as queen to Ahad and against which Elijah fought so strenuously.
