Via Negationis

Meaning 'by way of negation' in Latin, via negationis was a method of doing theology in which God is described in terms of what He is not. Its use in Western theology is best represented by Thomas of Aquinas, and its opposition by Duns Scotus. It is also called apophatic theology (in contrast to cataphatic theology).
