American Reformed Old Testament scholar, Bruce K. Waltke is a distinguished Old Testament scholar and a highly respected teacher with a deeply pastoral heart, with whom the founder of Alberith has had the privilege to study under at Regent College, and to whom this site is dedicated.
After receiving a Th. D. from Dallas seminary and Ph. D. from Harvard University Dr. Waltke has had an extensive teaching career spanning Dallas Seminary (from which he resigned when he felt that he could no longer hold to the theological stance of dispensationalism, to which faculty and students are required to affirm), Westminster Seminary, Regent Graduate School (Vancouver, BC), and Knox Theological Seminary . He has published numerous books and articles including: Hebrew Grammar, Introduction to Biblical Hebrew Syntax (Eisenbrauns, ), Proverbs (NICOT, 2 vols., 2005), Micah (Tyndale Commentary Series, 2007), Finding the Will of God (Eerdmans, 2002), The Dance Between God and Humanity: Reading the Bible Today (Zondervan, 2011)An Old Testament Theology (Zondervan, 2011), Genesis (with C. J. Fredricks, Zondervan, 2016), and with J. Houston, The Psalms as Christian Lament and The Psalms as Christian Worship: An Historical Commentary and The Psalms as Christian Lament: A Historical Commentary (Eerdmans). Waltke has also served as the President of the Evangelical Theological Society, and as editor of and contributor to various Bible translations (including NASB, NIV, and TNIV). Apart from articles in various scholarly journals, his articles may also be found in the Theological Word Book of the Old Testament and the New International Dictionary of Old Testament Theology and Exegesis.
Wikipedia reports the following about Waltke's resignation from Reformed Theological Seminary in 2010:
In April 2010, news reports emerged alleging that Waltke was asked to resign his professorship at the Reformed Theological Seminary because he advocated that evolution and Christianity were compatible in a video on the Biologos Foundation's website.[7][8] However, the RTS chancellor, Ric Cannada, later stated that this was not the case and that Waltke had submitted his resignation without solicitation.[9] Waltke himself clarified things: "Ric's acceptance of my resignation has only added to the emotional turmoil; I have received letters from many quarters condemning RTS for his action. In fact, I was asked to be interviewed about my resignation on ABC News with Diane Sawyer! Of course, I refused because I am certain it would have been spun to reflect negatively on RTS and the church. I find no fault with the RTS administration; in fact, I think they did the right thing."
A festschrift, edited by J. I Packer and Sven Soderlund and entitled The Way of Wisdom has also been published in B. K. Waltke's honour (Zondervan, 2000).
This website is dedicated to him, and in memory of Rev John Stott.
