Wartburg Castle

The castle belong to Friedrick the Wise to which Martin Luther was 'kidnapped' and kept 'captive' for his protection against the possible wrath of the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire soon after he left the Diet of Worms in 1521. Here he began and completed his translations of the New Testament into German.

Sadly this was also the same place where, in 1939, the Institute for the Study and Eradication of Jewish Influence on German Church Life was inaugurated. Its aim was to purge German Christianity of any taint of Jewishness as part of the Nazi programme of purification of all things Aryan.
