Synod of Whitby

664

A council called by King Oswiu of Northumbria (England) to settle the question of when Easter should be celebrated. The decision in favour of Rome's method of computing the date for Easter won out, resulting—in the longer term—in bringing the Northumbrian church into the mainstream of Roman culture and—more immediately—in the transference of the episcopal seat of Northumbria from Lindisfarne to York.
