In the Bible wine, Hebrew yayin and Greek oinos, always refers to the fermented and, therefore, alcoholic, juice of the grape fruit. Relatively low in alcohol content it is the choice drink during times of celebration and feasting.
"Strong drink," or "fermented drink" (NIV), shekar or sikera, on the other refers to alcoholic drinks fermented from other crops, usually barley, and is better understood as beer.
