A very popular name derived from the Hebrew verb zakar, 'remember,' the name, therefore, means "mindful of," and twelve individuals in the Old Testament hold it as their own, none of whom was really outstanding in any way. They are ususally listed only as the father or son of someone else who did something worth remembering. It appears as Zichri in most English translations but as Zicri in NIV.
1) Son of Izhar, son of Kohath, the Levite (Exo 6:21).
2) Three members of the tribe of Benjamin: son of Shimei (1 Chron 8:19), son of Shashak (1 Chron 8:23), and son of Jeroham (1 Chron 8:27).
3) Son of Asaph (1 Chron 9:15). He is also called Zabdi and Zaccur in the parallel passages in Neh 11:17 and 12:35 respectively.
4) A descendant of Eliezer, son of Joram and father of Shelomoth who, with his kinsmen, were was "in charge of all the treasuries for the things dedicated by King David, by the heads of families who were the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, and by the other army commanders" (1 Chron 26:25).
5) A man whose son, Eliezer (not to be confused with that noted in 4 above), was chief officer over the Reubenites in the reign of David (1 Chron 27:16).
6) Father of a certain Amasiah who volunteered as a commander with 200,000 men in Jehoshaphat's army (2 Chron 17:11).
7) Father of a certain Elishaphat who past party to Jehoiada's plot to make Joash king instead of the usurper queen Athaliah (2 Chron 23:1).
8) An Ephraimite warrior who killed Maaseiah (King Ahaz's son), together with the officer in-charge of the palace and the second in command to the king, during the Syro-Ephraimite War (2 Chron 28:7).
9) Father of Joel who was chief officer over the tribe of Benjamin among those who returned from the Babylonian exile (Neh 11:9).
10) A Levite who headed the priestly family of Abijah in the reign of Jehoakim (Neh 12:17).
