This area is covered by a complex of buildings and storage houses from the Byzantine era. "A number of granaries are sunk into the ground. Liquids, such as wine and oil, were stored in rooms with one or more circular jars sunk into the floor. Any spillage was swept into them for recovery" (J. Murphy-O'Connor).
