Second Wall

In his writings, Josephus reports that Jerusalem was in his time surrounded by three three walls. Little remains of the so-called 'Second Wall' has been found and its exact course and origin remain uncertain. Most scholars suggest that it likely ran along the line indicated in the photo. This would have served to protect the residences of the aristocrats and wealthy living in the Upper City. Significantly, of course, it placed Golgotha outside the city wall, as Jewish mores required it.
