The chapters of this book were originally written as articles for The Irish Evangelical (now The Evangelical Presbyterian), a monthly which I have edited for over forty years. They appeared in the issues from March '944 to June '945. Mter their appearance in this way, a close friend urged that they be made available in book form. So it came about that in December '945 the first edition of this volume appeared.
I am indebted to my one-time fellow-student and lifelong friend, the late Professor N. B. Stonehouse, for helpful suggestions at a few points in chapter 'S. Acknowledgments to others have been made in the text. If in any case due acknowledgment has been overlooked, I am sincerely sorry.
This little book has enjoyed a circulation beyond all my hopes. A fresh printing - the sixth - has been undertaken by the Banner of Truth Trust, to whose ministry so many are indebted. It is sent forth in this new format with the prayer that it may serve to kindle expectation and longing for 'the momentous event' itself and for the grace to be brought to His own at His appearing (I Peter I: 13).
TO MY WIFE
The Momentous Event is three-quarters of a century old, and yet nothing in it is dated. In its examination of Scriptures regarding the Second Coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, it remains solid and steadfast despite so much that is publicity-grabbing that has been published since then. This book, to be sure, will continue to outlast many of those flimsy expositions that have made it to our bookshops in the last few decades. We hope that, with its re-publication in the ALBERITH format, you will find the solid biblical teaching for which the book has been so well appreciated.
The pagination in this edition follows the 1976 reprint by the Banner of Truth Trust.

Editor, ALBERITH
As mentioned in the author's foreword, the book originated as a series of articles for The Irish Evangelical, a monthly of which the author had been editor. It was collated and first published in book form in 1945 and published by the Evangelical Bookshop, Belfast, in 1945. It was subsequently reprinted at least four times, before the Banner of Truth Trust republished it in 1970. This ALBERITH edition is based on the Banner of Truth edition that was reprinted in 1976.
