The English word "bishop" translates the Greek word episkopos "overseer." The word seems to have first found common use in the 9th Cent (about the time when William the Conqueror took control of England).
Bishopric is the general term for the area over which a bishop exercises his authority; in the administrative language of the Anglican Church today, this would be called the "province." The church to which he is normally attached ('resides') and out of which he exercises his authority is called a cathedral (from 'cathera,' Latin for 'throne').
