Church Fathers

The name given by church historians to a number of important Christian writers who lived the period leading up to the conversion of Constantine, when Christianity became recognized by the state. Their writings enable us to understand the developments both of church life and doctrine in the years after the deaths of the apostles.

Those most commonly included in their numbers include:

Irenaeus of Lyon

Athanasius
